Contrary to what many believe, the sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) is not a rodent. It is perhaps its resemblance to the flying squirrel that is the origin of this belief. Rather, it is a marsupial native to New Guinea and the east coast of Australia. In nature, it lives in a group led by a dominant polygamous male. It feeds on tree sap and gum, flower nectar, insects and arachnids. The sugar glider is not easy to keep in captivity (huge cage, special diet, sometimes difficult character). However, for someone who wants to invest fully in providing optimal captivity conditions for their animal and who has a lot of time to devote to it, the sugar glider can be an extremely endearing and unique animal.
 
Contrairement à ce que plusieurs croient, le phalanger volant (Petaurus breviceps) n’est pas un rongeur. C’est peut-être sa ressemblance avec l’écureuil volant qui est à l’origine de cette croyance.
Il est plutôt un marsupial originaire de la Nouvelle-Guinée et de la côte est de l’Australie. En nature, il vit en groupe dirigé par un mâle polygame dominant. Il se nourrit de la sève et la gomme des arbres, du nectar des fleurs, d’insectes et d’arachnides. Le phalanger n’est pas facile à garder en captivité (cage énorme, diète spéciale, caractère parfois difficile). Cependant pour quelqu’un qui désire s’investir à fond afin d'offrir des conditions de captivité optimales à son animal et qui a beaucoup de temps à lui consacrer, le phalanger peut être un animal ultra attachant et unique.
